About Dr. Carolyn Davidson
I’ve been a fully licensed psychologist in Tennessee for over 30 years with extensive experience in clinical work, presentations, and training across private practice and government settings. I’m currently a full-time telehealth psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and my private practice appointments are exclusively telehealth, scheduled during weekday evenings (5 PM ET or later) with occasional appointments during the day on weekends.I specialize in focused psychotherapy for anxiety, stress, insomnia or sleep difficulties, chronic pain (also called persistent pain), and depression. If more than one of these issues are present for you (that’s not at all uncommon, by the way), our goals will take this interconnection into account. Our work will be grounded in findings from neuroscience about the nervous system’s primary role in effective growth and change - and hey, it’s cooler than it sounds!

Free 15-Minute Telephone Consultation
Are you thinking of starting therapy with me, or do you have questions? If so, I’m happy to arrange a free 15-minute telephone consultation with you. This conversation helps us know whether what you’re looking for fits with what I offer. This experience of “fit” is important and one of the most important aspects of successful psychotherapy.
During our conversation, you can ask any questions you have and let me know what is bringing you to therapy at this time.
We’ll discuss possible ways to work together to improve things for you.
To set this up or to ask a question, just call me at (423) 225-2271 or click here to send me a message - I’d be happy to hear from you!

Therapy Approaches and Modalities
My approach when working with you will be highly collaborative and personalized. We’ll partner to develop specific goals that are realistic, achievable, and grounded in your personal values. We also discuss skills you can practice related to your goals. This between-session practice is where change happens, as you will be training your brain to create new pathways which will improve the quality of your life. There’s a lot of flexibility in how we can work together. I’m trained and experienced with the following:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression (CBT)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP)
- Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)
- Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)I’m also a certified mindfulness facilitator, and clients often say that learning and practicing mindful awareness boosts the effectiveness of their psychotherapy.

Is Telehealth Effective?
Yes!Research shows that therapy delivered through telehealth is as effective as in-person treatment.
There are also unique advantages to telehealth including being able to attend therapy at flexible times without a commute to an office, being able to attend therapy in your real-world environment, increased access to the therapist of your choice, and increased access to specialized treatment.
Video telehealth sessions can be easily done via your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.
For most people it comes down to a personal choice about whether in-person or telehealth therapy is preferred. Both are effective!

The fee for service is due in full at the time of your session. I accept all major credit cards and health savings account cards. You will be asked to store your payment card information via my practice’s secure portal.
I am an “out-of-network” provider and my office does not accept or file insurance.
However, many PPO insurance plans will cover some percentage of my services as part of an “out-of-network benefit.” There may be a separate out of network deductible and the reimbursement amounts may be smaller.
You can explore your plan’s website or call your plan’s customer service to find out if there are out of network benefits and what they might be.
You can file your insurance without cost directly with your insurance company, or you can use one of several online services which, for a fee, will help with out-of-network filing and insurance follow-up. One example is “Thrizer” who advertises they will look up your out of network benefits for you once an account is created. (NOTE: This information is presented for awareness only, and is not an endorsement.)
I can provide you a comprehensive digital statement called a “superbill” which includes all information required for you to submit a claim to your policy provider. If any additional information is required by your insurance coverage, such as reports for service authorization, those can also be provided if you request. We’ll talk before anything is completed or sent in so you won’t have any surprises. Your privacy decisions and your wishes are the most important factors.
I am happy to discuss any issues with you regarding finances or reimbursement, but I cannot guarantee my services are covered either in full or in part under your insurance policy.
Note about Medicare: If you have Medicare and want to see me, you will have to sign a contract with my office stating that you will pay for sessions completely out of pocket and that you will not file for Medicare reimbursement. Please see the Medicare FAQ for more information.

If you have Medicare, the laws are complex. I have “opted out” of the Medicare system.
This means you may still schedule with me, but Medicare laws require you to sign a contract with me agreeing that you pay privately for my services and that you will not file for reimbursement from Medicare.

Many people have been harmed by surprise medical bills, sometimes called “balance billing”. This might be present, for example, with charges incurred during emergency or surgical care when there may be out-of-network providers included in care without the patient’s knowledge. To address this and to protect patients from surprise medical bills, the “Federal No Surprises Act” went into effect on January 1, 2022. This Act requires all licensed health providers who offer out-of-network services to post a notice of “Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills” in private offices and on websites. This notice can be viewed here.
Additional information can be found here: https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
Please understand that my mental health services are different from the above scenario, and I am completely transparent with my billing and fees. I do not engage in surprise or balance billing. In accordance with the Act, at your request I will gladly provide a “Good Faith Estimate” of the costs of services prior to our first intake and then again over the course of treatment.
